The Westwood section of the Metro Purple Line received another boost in the amount of $100 million from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). The federal grant was issued towards the construction of the third section of the Metro Purple Line subway connecting Century City with Westwood. This marks the FTA’s second allocation of $100 million towards the project that’s expected to exceed $3 billion.
In a statement by Senator Dianne Feinstein, who assisted with securing federal funding, “I’m pleased the federal government continues to be committed to moving the Purple Line Extension forward. This is critical funding for a long-awaited section that will help reduce traffic times, alleviate congestion and connect commuters from downtown Los Angeles to Westside.”
Feinstein continued, “I know LA Metro is eager to complete this extension before the 2028 Olympic Games to showcase our world-class public transportation options.” Section 3 is the last segment of the nine-mile Purple Line Extension Project and will cover 2.6 miles between Century City and the Westwood/ Veterans Administration Hospital complex.
Metro CEO Phillip A. Washington was appreciative of Feinstein’s support. “On behalf of Metro, I want to express our sincere gratitude to Senator Feinstein for her strong and sustained leadership in securing federal funding for the Westside Purple Line Extension Project,” said Washington in a statement. “Senator Feinstein has been and remains a remarkably effective champion for increasing mobility across Los Angeles County for millions of residents and for that our agency is extremely grateful.”
Work on the extension project is expected to be completed by 2027.
