One of the Southland’s most popular hiking trails, Runyon Canyon, will be closed for four months for a pipe replacement project, city officials announced Wednesday.
The Runyon Canyon hiking trails and other areas in the park will be closed from April until July, according to Councilman David Ryu’s office. The yoga field, however, will remain open.
The Runyon Canyon Water System Improvement project will replace one mile of a 6-inch pipe at the park. The project also includes upgrades to the fire protection system.
The replacement project is “critical” for public safety, because the Fire Department depends on the nearly 100-year-old pipe to fight fires, according to Ryu aide Estevan Montemayor.
The Department of Water and Power has identified more than 30 weak spots along the pipe that are vulnerable to leaks, Montemayor said.
More details of the closure are expected to be announced Thursday.
