Authorities today identified a young man fatally shot by an employee of a taco stand during what police said was an attempted robbery of the South Los Angeles business.
The shooting took place at about 11:30 p.m. Friday at San Pedro Street and West Century Boulevard , Los Angeles police Lt. Clint Dohmen said.
Lomita resident Darnell Washington — said to be in his 20s — died at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter said.
Washington and two other men attempted to rob the business, according to police.
“Three men walked up to the taco stand with the intention of robbing it,” Dohmen said. “One of the men pulled out a handgun and one of the employees at the taco stand pulled out his gun and fired at the robbers.”
After Washington fell mortally wounded, the other would-be robbers fled and still are at large, authorities said.
