This Year, the Race Introduces a New Start Line Near the Familiar Finish Line on Ocean Avenue
The Santa Monica Classic, presented by ASICS, will mark its 19th year with an enhanced experience on Sunday, Sept. 8. The annual oceanfront road race, attracting over 7,000 participants, will feature a revamped route and festivities.
This year, the race introduces a new start line near the familiar finish line on Ocean Avenue, offering runners an extended stretch along the scenic avenue. The route will blend city streets with panoramic coastal views, culminating in a finish festival at the 3rd Street Promenade.
“We are excited to welcome runners to this year’s Santa Monica Classic,” said Andrew Thomas, CEO of Downtown Santa Monica, Inc, in a release. “This event showcases our community’s charm, downtown businesses, and the refreshed course improvements, promising an unforgettable experience in September.”
The 2024 race will also host the Road Runners Club of America National 5K Championship, adding prestige to the 3.1-mile distance. Founded in 1958, the RRCA is the oldest and largest distance running organization in the U.S., representing 200,000 runners through over 1,500 clubs and events.
The 10K race will start at 7:30 a.m., followed by the 5K at 9 a.m. The new routes are designed to enhance the runner’s experience and address traffic and parking concerns. The 10K course offers a challenging yet picturesque route, while the 5K provides a fast, beautiful backdrop for national competitors and personal best seekers.
