David Pitt, professor of philosophy at California State University, Los Angeles, has been awarded a 2014 Fulbright Scholar grant to teach and conduct research in Budapest, Hungary. The grant is awarded by the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

As a Fulbright Scholar, Pitt is serving as a visiting professor in the philosophy department at the Central European University (CEU) and as a Fulbright Research Fellow in the Institute for Advanced Study.

A resident of West Los Angeles, Pitt is teaching a graduate seminar in the philosophy department at the CEU, and he has been invited as a guest lecturer to speak at the Hungarian Academy of Science; the University of Graz, Austria; the University of Pécs, Hungary; and the University of Antwerp, Belgium.

Pitt said he was planning to take advantage of other Fulbright Foundation activities in Budapest. These include a weekend visit to a Soviet-era forced labor camp in Recsk and a trip to the city of Eger, famed for its months-long resistance to the Turkish Siege of 1552, as well as for its signature red wine known as “Bull’s Blood.”

A Cal State L.A. faculty member since 2003, Pitt received his Ph.D. in philosophy from the City University of New York Graduate Center. His research and teaching interests are focused on philosophy of mind, philosophy of language and metaphysics. He has authored numerous articles and chapters in books and professional journals.

Pitt is one of approximately 800 U.S. faculty and professionals who are or will be traveling abroad through the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program in 2014-15. The program is administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, a division of the Institute of International Education.

The Fulbright program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between people in the U.S. and other countries. The program operates in over 125 countries worldwide.
