Some Lost Their Freedom, Some Lost All

Maximum Enforcement Periods (MEP) have been an integral part of California Highway Patrol (CHP) for many years. During an MEP, the CHP is proactive to deploy the maximum amount of uniformed personnel to address primary collision factor violations, impaired drivers, and assure a prompt response to any incident causing a hazard or traffic delay. The primary goal of every officer during MEP’s is to reduce traffic related deaths as a result of impaired and reckless drivers.

The 2015 Independence Day Holiday Maximum Enforcement Period began at 6 p.m. on Friday, July 3rd, 2015, and continued through11:59 p.m., on Sunday, July 5th, 2015.

This year’s MEP, 26 people were killed in collisions statewide and 930 DUI arrests were made. In Los Angeles County, two people were killed and 229 DUI arrests were made.

We would like to note that 2014’s MEP contained one more 24 hour period compared to 2015.

Our mission is to reduce roadway deaths to zero. Although this may seem like a daunting task, we envision a day where we will be able to report only good news. The CHP would like to communicate that driving under the influence and driving recklessly has a greater consequence than one can imagine.
