Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Christopher Nolan will direct “Dunkirk,” an action thriller set during the legendary evacuation of the northern French city during World War II.
Nolan plans to begin shooting in May at many of the real locations of the true-life events which form the background for his original screenplay, according to the studio.
The cast will be headed by yet-to-be-cast unknowns, but Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh and Tom Hardy are in talks to join the ensemble, according to Warner Bros.
The film will be shot using a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large format film photography.
Nolan will produce the film with his longtime producing partner Emma Thomas.
Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute “Dunkirk” worldwide and has slated the film for a July 21, 2017, release.
