High Surf and Strong Currents Expected in the Coming Days

High surf and strong rip currents are expected along the Southland coast today and Thursday, forecasters said.

Elevated surf of between 3 and 5 feet are expected both days in both Los Angeles and Orange counties, along with dangerous rip currents, according to the National Weather Service.

“There is an increased risk for Ocean for ocean drowning. Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea,” warned an NWS statement. “Sneaker waves can suddenly wash people off of beaches or rocks and capsize small boats near shore.”

A beach hazard statement, which is slightly less serious than a high surf advisory, will be in effect in L.A. and Orange counties through Thursday afternoon.

The weather service also forecast partly cloudy skies in Los Angeles County and highs of 74 in Avalon; 77 at LAX; 83 in downtown L.A. and Long Beach; 86 in Burbank and on Mount Wilson; 87 in San Gabriel; 89 in Pasadena; 90 in Saugus; 92 in Woodland Hills; 100 in Palmdale; and 101 in Lancaster.

Sunny skies were forecast in Orange County, along with highs of 75 in San Clemente; 76 in Newport Beach; 79 in Laguna Beach; 82 in Mission Viejo; 83 in Irvine; 84 in Anaheim; 86 in Fullerton; and 88 in Yorba Linda.

Temperatures Thursday will be about the same as today’s or marginally lower.
