Last week MoviePass – the subscription-based movie ticketing service that allows subscribers to purchase a single movie ticket per day for a flat subscription fee of $9.95 per month and see one film per day – removed 10 AMC theaters from its service. Among them is AMC’s Century City cinemas.
While most theaters were okay with the system given that MoviePass paid them full price for the tickets, AMC was not happy with the arrangement and spoke out against MoviePass’ low price to customers, saying it would depreciate the value of a ticket. Not long after, MoviePass stopped offering its services to 10 AMC cinemas.
MoviePass CEO Mitch Lowe issued an official statement that said, “Our number one goal as a company is to provide an accessible price-point for people to enjoy films the way they’re meant to be seen: on the big screen. Many exhibitors have been receptive to this mission, and we’re excited to keep working with theater chains that are closely aligned with our customer service values.”
However, several people have already cancelled their MoviePass after learning that Century City was among those that no longer accepted them.
