5th District Councilmember Paul Koretz took part in last week’s celebration of Persian New Year – Nowruz – in Westwood.
Council District 5 is home to the largest population of Persians in Los Angeles, which has also been known as “Tehrangeles”. In the Persian Square area of Westwood, Councilmember Koretz in cooperation with Beautify Earth, an L.A.-based grassroots non-profit organization, participated in a public art project of painting Persian designs on eight utility boxes.
The event also highlighted the work of Iranian-Americans who have contributed greatly to L.A.:
Mona Iman: an Iranian-American grassroots human rights activist;
Alex Helmi: a community organizer, philanthropist and renowned leader in the Persian community in Westwood;
Homa Sarshar: an Iranian-American author, activist, feminist and journalist;
Farshid Shooshani: a philanthropist, businessman and Planning Commissioner for the City of Beverly Hills;
Bita Milanian; an Iranian-American leader, known for connecting the community with technology, art and philanthropy.
Senior Vice President in Global Marketing Dariush Eghbali, famous Iranian-American singer. Founder of Ayeneh Foundation, which over the years has empowered thousands of individuals with education, awareness & prevention with regard to substance abuse.
Nima Taghavi: an Iranian-American entrepreneur and philanthropist who has been deeply involved in helping the people of Eastern Congo through the Eastern Congo Initiative; and
Fatemeh Ibrahimi-Nazarian: Professor at USC Marshall School of Business.
