Westwood Fire Damages 2 Businesses

D1 Cafe and Fatburger suffered minor damage.

By Sam Catanzaro

Early Sunday morning a fire broke out in a commercial building in Westwood Village, potentially injuring one person and damaging two businesses. At the time of printing, the fire remains under investigation.

At 2:36 a.m. the fire broke at 10959 West Kinross Avenue, the corner of the building that is occupied by D1 Cafe, Fatburger and SMOKE SPOT.

“Firefighters arrived to find a one-story commercial building with smoke showing from ‘D1 Cafe’ which is one of at least three businesses within the building,” reads the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) incident alert.

49 firefighters spent 41 minutes fighting the fire and were able to extinguish the flames in time to prevent any severe damage.

“Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames and stopped the horizontal spread into the adjoining business,” the LAFD incident report reads.

According to the incident alert, a 47-year-old male was treated at the scene by paramedics and then transported to the hospital with an unspecified medical complaint. At the time of printing, the status of the individual is unknown to the LAFD.

Despite the fast response of the LAFD that prevented the fire from reaching Fatburger and SMOKE SPOT, the blaze still left its mark on these establishments.

Dina, the manager of the Fatburger, said that the fire did not impact the restaurant directly, but still is leaving its mark on her business.

“We had some damage,” she said. “There is lots of smell…from the fire still.”

In addition, the fire early Sunday morning damaged the water heater at Fatburger. With no hot water, Dina was forced to shut down operations on Sunday.

On Monday, the Los Angeles Department of Building and Saftey (LADBS) performed an inspection of the fire-damaged structure and reported that “fire damaged a small section of the attic and roof,” of D1 Cafe, according to Jeff Napier, Public Information Officer for the LADBS.
