UCLA Slowly Reopening Campus Following Over Year-Long Closure

By Toi Creel

After almost a year to date of virtual learning and exclusively closed facilities, UCLA is allowing limited reopening for some of their buildings.

In a campus wide email, school administration confirmed the Charles E. Young Research Library, the Hugh & Hazel Darling Law Library, and “ specific campus outdoor study spaces, some recreation facilities, and some arts studio and practice spaces” would be opening.

For the Charles E Young Research Library, only the main floor and A-level will open Monday, March 15.The Hugh & Hazel Darling Law Library will be open at 25% capacity for in-person individual law students.  In order to get a spot, students, faculty, and staff will have to reserve a seat online through the library website. Reservations open Friday, March 12th. In addition, everyone who enters will have to show their Bruincard, wear a mandatory face mask throughout their visit, and show a  COVID-19 symptom monitoring clearance certificate (an online survey used to screen guests and possible symptoms and exposure to the virus). For the Law library, all reserved seats need a specific day and time.

Students will be allowed to complete group study outside and meet with faculty and TAs, but they can’t exceed 10 people, must wear masks, and need permission before meeting. The amphitheater lawn and tennis courts at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center will also open  Tuesday, March 16 at reduced capacity for students. Practice rooms and facilities for the Herb Alpert School of Music, School of Theater, Film and Television, School of the Arts and Architecture will also be open at limited capacity per request of the faculty and prescheduled meeting times.

Despite the reopening, most facilities will remain reduced such as on-campus housing. Remote learning will remain priority until the end of the summer session due to Covid-19 vaccine availability. UCLA first began its closure and transition to remote learning on March 11.The University plans to return to in-person operations by fall 2021.
