Developer Set to Begin Construction on Private Housing for UCLA Students

The Mark coming to 10915 W. Strathmore Drive

By Dolores Quintana

Westwood will see new construction this summer as Landmark Properties plans to commence construction on their new multifamily housing project near the UCLA campus on the west side of the school as reported by Urbanize Los Angeles. This new development is named The Mark and the plans were approved by The City Planning Commission of Los Angeles. The project will rise to seven stories at 10915 W. Strathmore Drive, with 37 units of two, three, four and five-bedroom apartments, five of which will be reserved as five very low-income housing units, for a total of 166 bedrooms. The new development is being built on land that was formerly the site of a Lutheran Church.

LOHA (Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects) is the designer and their website for the project states, “LOHA’s material choices for the building envelope of solid, perforated, and ribbed white metal panels project the vibrancy embedded within the project’s form, programming, and functions. Cement board painted in eight green-hued layers creates a gradient effect that grounds the building’s base and lightens as the structure meets the sky.” The design will split the building into “two volumes” intended to “ integrate the structure’s overall massing with the existing landscape, provide wind cross-ventilation to the apartments, and define a clear circulation path through the property.” Their website says that the firm embraces architecture as a “social act.”

Urbanize Los Angeles quoted Landmark Properties’ president and chief executive officer from a statement. “Westwood is severely underserved with high-quality, purpose-built student housing, and we look forward to bringing our industry-leading product to the students of UCLA. Our team did a great job of sourcing this off-market opportunity and navigating a challenging entitlement process to bring this project to fruition.”
