LAFD says refrigerant leak cause of January 2 odor
A report of a hazardous material leak on the UCLA campus Monday was deemed unfounded.
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), the incident was reported on January 2 around 5:30 p.m. near the Learning Resource Center at 700 Westwood Plaza.
“A UCLA officer investigated an alarm (chemical smell) in a building on campus [and] began feeling unwell. Firefighters are [investigating] for a possible leak of [an] unknown substance,” the LAFD said in an incident alert. “The officer exited the building on their own and is alert and oriented.”
LAFD’s HazMat Squad responded to the scene and determined there was no HazMat protocol required.
“After a thorough search and investigation, all floors were cleared and no hazardous materials [were] located. It is believed a refrigerant leak was the cause of the odor,” the LAFD said.
