The Getty’s Newest Exhibition and An Author Talk At The Hammer Museum Light Up May

The Getty’s Exhibition of Photographer Tim Walker’s Work and An Author Talk With Sigrid Nunez At The Hammer Museum Offer Art To The Westside

By Dolores Quintana

The Getty Center’s latest exhibition, featuring internationally acclaimed fashion photographer Tim Walker, is a tribute to his unique style of image-making. From May 2 to August 20, visitors can explore fantastical worlds created in collaboration with set designers, stylists, makeup artists, models, and muses. The exhibition will showcase a new series of photographs inspired by the collections of the Getty Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The show is presented in both English and Spanish.

On the Getty Museum’s website, it talks about Walker’s association with the Victoria and Albert Museum, “In 2016, London’s Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), the world’s largest museum of applied and decorative arts, invited the internationally acclaimed fashion photographer Tim Walker to delve into its vast and eclectic collection. Walker selected an array of “wonderful things,” the art and design objects that served as inspiration for the series of nine photo shoots at the heart of this exhibition. In the same spirit, the Getty Museum invited Walker to explore its collection and embark on a tenth photo session. Photographs inspired by the two paintings Walker chose are on view here for the first time.”

On Wednesday, May 10 at 7:30 pm, the Hammer Museum will host a reading by National Book Award-winning author Sigrid Nunez, who will share her latest novel, “What Are You Going Through”. The book is a moving exploration of empathy, friendship, and the meaning of a good death. Nunez’s reading will be followed by a discussion with UCLA professor Mona Simpson, who is organizing this series, Some Favorite Authors.

According to the Hammer’s website, “Sigrid Nunez is the author of the novels “A Feather on the Breath of God”, “The Last of Her Kind”, “The Friend”, and “What Are You Going Through”, among others. She is also the author of “Sempre Susan: A Memoir of Susan Sontag”. She has been the recipient of several awards, including the Rome Prize in Literature, and a Guggenheim. Her books have been translated into thirty languages.”

Admission is free, and seats are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Hammer Members have priority ticketing until 15 minutes before the program. Valet parking is available for $10 cash only, and self-parking is available under the museum.
