The Historic Spanish Hacienda, Also Formerly Owned By Director Sam Fuller
With a rich history dating back to the early 1930s, this magnificent Spanish hacienda nestled in the rugged mountains above Beverly Hills carries tales of notable former owners. Originally belonging to David Whitmire Hearst, one of publishing tycoon William Randolph Hearst’s sons, the gated estate has witnessed fascinating chapters of Hollywood lore.
Acquired by Hearst in the 1940s while he was making his mark in the publishing industry at the Los Angeles Herald-Express, the property was home to him and his wife, former teenage showgirl Hope Chandler, until 1953. It was then sold to filmmaker Sam Fuller, known for controversial works such as “The Naked Kiss” and “The Big Red One.” Fuller, in turn, passed the torch to renowned cult horror film director Larry Cohen, who resided there until his passing in 2019.
After being listed for sale at an ambitious price of $13.5 million, later reduced to just over $10 million, the estate eventually changed hands for $8.5 million in the spring of 2021. However, the identity of the buyers remained undisclosed until now. The mystery buyers have been revealed as Ashley and Sam Levinson, as reported by The Dirt.com. Sam Levinson turned his life around and went from drug addict to Hollywood showrunner of the incredibly popular “Euphoria.” The listing agent was Susan Smith of Hilton & Hyland.
Despite nearing its centenary, the house has been remarkably well-preserved. Set behind grand gates and a long driveway, the 7,000-square-foot main house showcases coffered and beamed ceilings, intricate wrought iron details, original hardwood floors, hand-carved marble fireplaces, and vibrant Spanish tilework. In addition to the five-bedroom mansion, the property also includes a one-bedroom guest apartment.
Offering unparalleled privacy, the estate is surrounded by lush grounds with manicured lawns and mature trees. A sizable swimming pool, tucked away from the main house, invites relaxation on its brick patio, providing ample space for sunbathing. From the private balcony of the master suite on the mansion’s second floor, breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and city lights can be enjoyed.
Sam Levinson is the son of acclaimed director Barry Levinson and he recently co-created the controversial series “The Idol” with The Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye.
