Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich Grace the Silver Screen at UCLA Film & Television Archive Event

Step Into Hollywood’s Golden Era with “Then Came Garbo” – A Cinematic Tribute to Iconic Queens

Join the UCLA Film & Television Archive for an enchanting cinematic experience as they present the screening series “Then Came Garbo.” Explore the world of iconic actresses Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich through the lens of Chilean filmmaker Cecilia Barriga and the timeless films “Queen Christina” (1933) and “Mata Hari” (1931).

The Meeting of Two Queens (1991) – 7:30 PM

Director: Cecilia Barriga
Chilean filmmaker Cecilia Barriga ingeniously recuts scenes from the films of Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich, constructing an imagined romantic encounter between the two icons of on-screen androgyny. (DCP, b&w, 14 min.)

Queen Christina (1933) – 8:00 PM

Director: Rouben Mamoulian
Greta Garbo portrays the gender-fluid regent of Sweden, Queen Christina, in a role that became one of the most celebrated of her career. Co-written by Salka Viertel, the script invents a male love interest for the queen, played by John Gilbert. Garbo delivers an authentically fierce performance as a woman who defied tradition and history. (35mm, b&w, 101 min.)

Mata Hari (1931) – 9:45 PM

Director: George Fitzmaurice
Inspired by the life of the eponymous WWI dancer-cum-double-agent, Greta Garbo stars as a glamorous German spy in this espionage melodrama set in Paris circa 1917. Directed by George Fitzmaurice, the film is hailed as a sexy romance featuring Garbo’s flawless portrayal. (35mm, b&w, 91 min.)
