Relatives of Erik and Lyle Menendez Call for Release as DA Reviews Claims of Abuse
Family members of Erik and Lyle Menendez, who have been serving life sentences for the murder of their parents in Beverly Hills over 35 years ago, are set to hold a press conference in Los Angeles on Wednesday. The event aims to push for a recommendation of resentencing, as new evidence in the high-profile case is under review by prosecutors.
Nearly two dozen relatives are expected to attend, including the brothers’ defense attorney Mark Geragos, and they will call on the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office to take action that could potentially lead to the brothers’ release. Their family hopes Erik and Lyle Menendez can be freed in time to celebrate Thanksgiving and their aunt’s 93rd birthday.
Earlier this month, L.A. County District Attorney George Gascón confirmed that his office was reviewing new evidence in the case. Among the evidence is a letter written by Erik Menendez that, according to his legal team, supports claims that his father sexually abused him. The brothers’ defense has long argued that the abuse contributed to the tragic events.
Rosie O’Donnell, a vocal supporter of the Menendez brothers, is also expected to join the rally alongside the brother’s defense team of Geragos and Cliff Gardner. The press conference is scheduled for 1 p.m., where attendees will answer questions from the media.
