Mark your calendars for a free APA Los Angeles event: a walking tour of Green Buildings and Sustainable Development in Santa Monica on Saturday, September 19th.
Program: APA Green Building Tour
Date: Saturday, September 19, 2009, 10 AM, Starting at Santa Monica Pier
The walking tour will visit several green building sites in downtown Santa Monica. At each tour site, the City’s Green Building Program Advisor will review the green features of the site including innovative technologies and design strategies. The City has an internal policy that all City buildings achieve LEED Silver certification. We will visit several LEED certified buildings and the tour will include an overview of LEED and other green building rating systems. The discussion will also include background on the City’s green building code requirements, and how they work in concert with other elements of the Santa Monica Sustainable City Plan to promote high performance buildings, sustainable growth, and improved quality of life in Santa Monica.
The event is FREE to APA members and $15 for non-members. We are applying for CM credit for this event. You must RSVP for this event as space is limited. Please RSVP to Gabriela Juarez via email (gabriela.juarez@lacity.org) by Friday, September 11, 5 pm.

UCLA and the Veterans Administration occupy among the largest pieces of real estate on the Westside. Both of these important institutions are guided by their own planning efforts with general autonomy from local government controls. UCLA will begin consideration of a new Long Range Development Plan and the VA is on the verge of undertaking a comprehensive master planning effort. Find out how they are both thinking about using their land to fulfill their critical missions for the 21st Century and how this relates to the greater community of Los Angeles.

Pasadena Civic Walking Tour – October 17th
Please Join APA for a Welcome Tour of the Pasadena Center. Home to the world famous Pasadena Civic Auditorium and the Pasadena Convention Center. It is also home to the Pasadena Center Operating company which manages the Pasadena Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The objectives for the tour include:
� A retrospective on the history of the project site and the importance of the Bennett Plan.
� An outline on how the project has enhanced the preservation of the historic Civic Auditorium.
� A look at how the project’s design has been integrated into and has embellished the public realm.
� The steps taken towards the creation of the most sustainable conference Center west of the Mississippi.

APA Supports its Members
The foundation of any professional association is its members. Without a diverse and engaged membership, an association can no longer be relevant. For the first time in a decade, APA California experienced a significant drop in membership. The downturn in the economy is confronting many of our members with a difficult decision – either to renew their membership or to commit those funds for other needs. The APA California Board of Directors wants to provide relief for those contemplating dropping their memberships.
The APA California Board has committed $50,000 from its reserve account towards a membership/conference support program. $30,000 will be established in a separate account to provide direct financial support towards membership fees. $20,000 will be set aside in a fund to provide financial support for those members in need to attend this year’s state conference at Squaw Creek. If you are unemployed or if your household income has dropped substantially, then this program is designed for you.
If you are unemployed, membership in APA California can be your strongest link to future opportunities. Reports state that 80 percent of all jobs are attained through networking. APA California wants to help you maintain those networking opportunities. Your local sections will be providing increased opportunities for networking in the coming months. The conference this year will also provide you numerous opportunities to meet with planning professionals throughout the state. We want you to stay connected.
Please review the numerous options available to you on the APA California Member Financial Support Program chart. No request for proof of financial hardship will be required. We are a family. This program will be run on the honor system. APA California wants to offer as much support as possible in these unprecedented times. If you would like to take advantage of this new program, please review the options available and then contact the APA California offices at sgassoc@msn.com or (916) 736-2434.
In addition your local Los Angeles Board is working with the State and National Organization to advocate for planning and planners in both public and private employment. We are working to inform policy and decisionmakers about all the planners do and that good urban planning is critical to answering many of today’s challenges. This fall APA will release a series of informational pieces to the press and elected officials highlighting all of the recent new mandates for planning in California as well as the importance of planning and other pre “shovel ready” activities to the California economy.
