‘Modern Family’ Home For Sale

Buy a home. Share it with a film crew. Okay, so the filming of the home’s interior actually takes place at a sound stage and not inside the actual residence, but the real-life Cheviot Hills house Modern Family used in the Emmy-winning television show has been put on the market, according to Redfin.

The exterior of the home on Dunleer Drive just west of Motor Avenue has regularly been featured as the Dunphy residence on ABC’s Modern Family.

According to Redfin, the asking price for the home at 10336 Dunleer Drive is $2.35 million, or $842 per square foot.

The 2,792 square foot home features four bedrooms and 4.5 baths.

“Sophistication, charm and attention to detail best describe this classic two-story, traditional home in a beautiful neighborhood with mature trees in coveted Cheviot Hills,” the Multiple Listing Service description reads. “You might even recognize this home as Claire and Phil Dunphy’s house from the hit TV sitcom, Modern Family.”

An open house was held at the property on March 15.

Redfin states the current owners purchased the house in October 2006 for $1.97 million. Prior to that, the house was sold for $1.025 million in June 2004.

Mitch Hagerman of Coldwell Banker – Venice/Marina is the agent, according to Redfin.

The MLS listing further adds the home has “rich mahogany hardwood floors throughout” and an “elegant formal dining room connects to a gourmet kitchen w/ professional Viking range and marble countertops.”

According to news reports, the current owner accepted a fee from the Modern Family production. The interior of the home used in the television show reportedly resembles the residence’s actually interior.

The production company behind Modern Family would have to enter into a new agreement with the home’s new owner in order to continue using the residence on the show. If the new owner does not allow the home to be featured on the show, the production company would have to find another residence to film.

How such a scenario would play out with the Modern Family storyline remains to be seen.

It is not uncommon for television programs or movies to rent out residences or pay the occupants a fee to shoot there.

The White residence in Breaking Bad was reportedly that of Frances Padilla in real life. According to Time, Padilla said as many as 200 passers-by drove by the house in Albuquerque during the show’s final season, as if it were a tourist attraction.

Last month, the home where Cameron lived in the film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off sold for  $1.25 million, almost half of the original $2.3 million asking price in 2010. The home is located in a Chicago suburb.

In Astoria, Ore., the home used in The Goonies has been a popular destination for many fans of the film, with 71 reviews of the residence on Yelp.com.

Two years ago, the Winnetka, Ill., house featured in Home Alone and Home Alone 2 sold for $1.585 million, down from its original asking price of $2.4 million in 2011.

Cheviot Hills is an affluent residential community bordering Century City.
