The adultery dating website Ashley Madison and its parent company are being sued in Los Angeles by a man who alleges the business failed to protect its clients’ personal and financial information, court papers obtained today show.
The proposed class-action lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court by a man identified only as “John Doe,” contends Toronto-based Ashley Madison and parent company Avid Life Media Inc. caused emotional distress as a result of negligence and invasion of privacy.
A company representative could not immediately be reached for comment.
The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages.
The complaint filed Friday is one of many filed throughout the country following a hack of the website by a group called the Impact Team, which weeks later posted the personal information of millions of members of the online dating site for married people.
According to the suit, the plaintiff joined the site in March 2012 in the belief that his “email would never be shown or shared.” He said the subsequent leak of his personal information has caused “irreparable harm.”
