Amazon officially applied for building permits May 9 for retail space at Westfield Century City.
Back in March, Century City News wrote that Amazon.com Inc. was considering opening a brick and mortar bookstore in Los Angeles, and the Westfield Century City Mall or a space in Westwood might make the cut.
On May 9, Amazon officially applied for building permits for a 5,227-square-foot suite at the Westfield Century City.
The application states that Amazon Books will open at suite No. 1970 and is described as a “first time tenant in Westfield Century City.”
Amazon had been looking at several possible sites, since recently announcing the opening of its 10th bookstore in Seattle. At the time, Steve McClurkin, a leasing broker at EB Development in San Diego who represents Amazon’s bookstores, said, “We have been evaluating the Southern California market for a little over a year.”
To date, there is no indication of when the store at the Mall will open, but don’t expect the Amazon store to be anything like a Barnes and Noble experience.
According to the San Diego Union Tribune, there won’t be any price tags on the books. Rather, the books will simply show a review and an average user rating. To find out the price of the book you’ll have to either ask one of the sales associates, or download the Amazon app and scan the product.
On the plus side, if you’re an Amazon Prime member, you’ll receive discounts on your purchases. And if you’re not a Prime member, you can buy one at the store, along with books, Kindles, FireTV and Fire tablets.
Retail analyst Neil Saunders of GlobalData said Amazon is set to open several hundred bookstores nationwide in the next decade.
