Members of American Legion Pacific Palisades Post 283 donated a $50,000, 11-passenger van on May 7 to the Veterans Home of California-West Los Angeles.
“Palisades Post 283 is excited to be able to donate this van to allow these residents of the California Veterans Home to be able to get out in the community and enjoy the quality of life that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to enjoy,” according to Scott Wagenseller, post commander.
Brenda Manke, director of the California Dept. of Veterans Affairs at the home, said the minivan would allow the veterans to go to San Diego, Yosemite or even the local supermarket.
“They have a lot of living to do,” Manke said, adding that many of the veterans are involved with local organizations and previously did not have an easy way to get around.
The home currently has a fleet of five 20-passenger buses to transport residents to medical appointments and off-site activities, requiring special Class B licenses to operate, according to the home.
The minivan allows smaller groups of residents to travel to evening and weekend activities, without the need for a special license.
“It is like giving them a new set a legs,” Manke said. “It really is.”
