Annual Dribble for the Cure to be held at UCLA today

The seventh annual Dribble for the Cure will be held at UCLA today, with the Bruin men’s and women’s basketball teams helping raise funds and awareness in the fight against pediatric cancer.

Participants will dribble a basketball over a 1.2-mile course through the campus. Individual participants and teams of at least 10 members will be asked to collect pledges.

Prizes will be awarded based on pledge amounts turned in by today.

Registration will be conducted from 8:30-10 a.m. at Drake Stadium, where a welcome ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. The dribble will begin at 10:15 a.m.

Finish line festivities will take place on Collins Court at the John Wooden Center at 11:15 a.m. where participants will be able to meet players and coaches with the UCLA men’s and women’s basketball teams and members of other Bruin teams.

The 2013 edition of Dribble for the Cure had a record net revenue of $167,000, the university announced. The event has raised more than $700,000 in its history, with proceeds helping support treatment for pediatric cancer patients at Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA.

“We are heartened to see this event grow each year and to witness the outpouring of support from the UCLA community of students, staff, patients and families,” said Dr. Theodore B. Moore, chief of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA.

“It is exciting to see how the fundraising efforts are translated into innovative research going on in the pediatric cancer labs at UCLA.”

Dribble for the Cure was conceived by John Vallely, a starting guard on UCLA’s 1969 and 1970 NCAA championship teams whose daughter, Erin, died from cancer in 1991, when she was 12 years old.
