Barrington Recreation Center – VA Field
Los Angeles, CA
Submitted by Eric
The VA field at Barrington Recreation Center is a City of Los Angeles, Recreation & Parks facility that is the home to literally 1000s of kids’ first experience with sports. The field is currently littered with gopher holes and, though used very frequently, is not meeting its potential for use in this very active community.
This field is important to the community because: It is the location of the only dog park on the westside of Los Angeles. It is used for one of the largest sports programs in the city through Barrington Recreation Center as well as AYSO soccer, Municipal Sports #### Softball, local schools, lacrosse clinics, special events, and a variety of other community based events.
This field is in poor condition because: The ground is uneven in spots, the field is worn from use, there are gopher holes everywhere that pose a risk of ankle injuries, there are no lights or scoreboards, and the community has expressed an interest in a running/walking track around the field.
This field’s restoration will help the community because: The families that currently use the field would be able to do so with lower risk of injury. A rebuilt field would attract more of the community to participate in the programs at the park or use the fields on their own time. Lights would allow everyone to use the field after they get home from work or school. Scoreboards would benefit all of the organized team sports that take place on the fields. The field’s location is central to the community, but the field itself is not being used to its full potential. Restoration of the field will not only encourage the community to get out and exercise, but can also create a central meeting point in the community for social gatherings.
