City Aligns With Governor’s Order To Provide Emergency Rental Relief
The Beverly Hills City Council voted Friday to modify a recently adopted urgency ordinance to align with Gov. Gavin Newsom’s executive order, which aims to provide emergency housing for individuals displaced by the recent Los Angeles County wildfires.
The governor’s order temporarily lifts the maximum rent cap for single-family homes with four or more bedrooms in the 90210 ZIP code. To qualify, the homes must not have been rented or listed for rent in the year before Jan. 6, 2025. The waiver remains in effect until March 8, 2025.
Additionally, the order removes restrictions on rental terms under the state’s price gouging statute, allowing the new regulations to apply to all rental housing, regardless of lease length.
The city’s action follows its previous emergency measure, which was unanimously approved last month, suspending short-term rental restrictions in Beverly Hills for 90 days to help fire victims find housing.
Under the ordinance, short-term emergency rental units and hotel rooms covered by the provision are exempt from the city’s Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT). Property owners offering short-term rentals will also be exempt from business tax requirements if they are not already subject to them.
Officials say the measures are intended to provide relief as displaced families continue searching for housing in the wake of the wildfires.
