Vibrant Community Space Set to Open in Westwood Village
By Dolores Quintana
A long-awaited project to create a vibrant public space in Westwood Village is finally underway, as reported by Urbanize Los Angeles. The Broxton Street plaza, funded through the L.A. Department of Transportation’s People St Program, is set to become a gathering place for the community, offering plazas, parklets, and other small open space features.
The idea for the plaza was initially conceived in 2015 by the Westwood Village Improvement Association, which sought support from the community through a petition. Originally planned to be built one block north, between Weyburn and Le Conte Avenue, the project received approval from the L.A. City Council in 2018. However, due to staffing shortages and other pandemic-related setbacks within LADOT, implementation was delayed until now. According to The Daily Bruin, construction is expected to be completed by July.
Once finished, the newly created plaza will serve as a vibrant hub for various community events. Farmers’ markets, live music performances, and other engaging activities are anticipated to bring life and energy to the space. The location, just two blocks north of the Wilshire and Westwood Boulevards intersection, holds even more promise for the community, as a new subway station is scheduled to open in the area in 2027.
The People St Program, designed to enhance neighborhoods with accessible open spaces, continues to bring positive transformations to communities across Los Angeles. The Broxton Street Plaza will undoubtedly be a valuable addition to the Westwood Village area, providing residents and visitors with a welcoming and lively environment.
