Experience a Nightmarish Blend of Film, Industrial Rock, and Opera
CAP UCLA, in collaboration with Beth Morrison Projects, is set to premiere Black Lodge, part groundbreaking operatic film and part industrial rock opera concert, on October 19, 2024, at The United Theater on Broadway. The Halloween-themed event encourages costumes and features an immersive pre-show experience, BARDO, beginning at 6:30 p.m., followed by the screening and live performance of Black Lodge at 8 p.m.
You can watch the trailer for Black Lodge here:
Black Lodge is inspired by the works of surrealist writer William S. Burroughs, blending industrial rock, classical music, and opera to explore themes of self-confrontation and existential reckoning. The story follows a tormented writer, portrayed by Timur, as he navigates a nightmarish landscape between life and death, haunted by repressed memories and regrets, particularly surrounding a central female figure played by Jennifer Harrison Newman. The operatic film combines striking visuals with a live concert performance by Timur and the Dime Museum, alongside the Isaura String Quartet.
You can purchase tickets at the CAP UCLA website.
Adding to the unique atmosphere, the pre-show immersive experience, BARDO invites audiences to explore a liminal space between life and death, interacting with performers in a haunted, immersive setting. The event concludes with a DJ set by DJ Baby Magick at 9 p.m.
Costume participation is encouraged, though restrictions apply, prohibiting face coverings, weapons, or large props that might obstruct views.
The production, with music by David T. Little and libretto by Anne Waldman, promises a dynamic and chilling Halloween experience, fusing multiple artistic disciplines into a captivating and surreal journey.
