Westfield Century City Faces Gap Lawsuit

Clothing retailer Gap has just sued the Westfield company for allegedly overcharging for rent space. According to the Wall Street Journal, over 24 Gap outlets at different Westfield locations are claiming that the malls used deceptive measurements in order to charge more rent.

According to the report, Gap believes that Westfield used empty storefronts to illegally include in the total rent charge.

Large online retailers like Amazon are creating “fertile territory for there to be more challenges” to traditional retailers according to Douglas M. Bregman, a senior partner at the law firm Bregman Berbert Schwartz & Gilday in Maryland, who was interviewed for the Wall Street Journal article.

L.A.-based accounting company BDO USA just announced plans to move from their Century City offices to the Commonwealth Management Services-owned property 515 S. Flower Street in Downtown Los Angeles. Formerly occupying Commonwealth’s 1888 Century Plaza East space, the firm plans to move by the end of the year.

According to The Real Deal, the move may have to do with a recent spate of firms leaving the Westside for Downtown offices due to increasing rents and hard-to-find office space in Century City.

Happy Birthday, “Die Hard!” Fox Plaza, Then and Now

Anyone who’s seen the classic film “Die Hard” probably knows the outline of the iconic Century City landmark “Nakatomi Plaza” by heart. But the building hijacked by Alan Rickman and his motley crew, later to be saved by Bruce Willis’s heroic efforts, is actually the Fox Plaza in the heart of Century City, owned by the Irvine Company.

If you can believe that one of the world’s most famous Christmas movies was released 30 years ago today, on July 15, 1988, you’ll know why the blog L.A. Taco had cause to celebrate with two side-by-side comparison shots of the Fox building. Below, witness the Fox building then and now, an icon of Century City history.

First Republic Bank already has a formidable presence in Century City. In addition to its current 1888 Century Park East location, the financial institution just announced plans to expand by leasing 100,000 square feet of the building to the Chicago firm BDO USA. After moving in the new accounting company next year, First Republic plans to move downtown to S. Flower Street, one in a series of moves from Century City businesses to the Arts District area of downtown.
