Century City Chamber Golf Tournament to tee off Sept. 5

The Helicopter Ball Drop is a highlight of the Century City golf day.

The Century City Chamber of Commerce is in the midst of planning a leisurely sporting event that scores a hole-in-one with its participants year after year.

The 34th annual Century City golf tournament is set to take place Friday, Sep. 5 and serve as a major fundraiser for the Chamber and its non-profit nature.

With a raffle, silent auction, a provided lunch and dinner, and a handful of other activities on top of the sport of golf itself, the tournament is sure to create a jam-packed, fun-filled day for all of the community members involved.

With the lineup of activities in mind, planning this event seems to be a feat in itself.

Despite the challenge, co-chair of the golf committee Sarah Shaw sees the tournament as a great opportunity for the Century City community and expressed her gratitude toward the participants. This year will be Shaw’s second time chairing the event.

“Who doesn’t like a day away from the office to play some golf?” Shaw said. “We’ve been very fortunate to have a great turnout every year. Even during the recession, we had a full event. We usually always sell out.”

It’s no surprise that an abundance of community members partake in this well-planned tournament every year.

From games like the Helicopter Ball Drop, to fine food and drink like the hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, to prizes that come alongside the raffle and silent auction, this annual golf tournament is anything but the average sporting event with all that it has to offer.

“The Helicopter Ball Drop is one of the more awaited events throughout the course of the day,” Shaw said. “We sell numbers associated with the balls dropped, and at the end of the tournament before dinner, we all watch from a balcony as about 300 balls are dropped from a helicopter.”

Essentially, participants purchase the balls that end up being released from the sky onto the golf course, which then naturally scatter within the vicinity of a set pin. The ball that lands the closest to the pin or in the hole lands its owner a $1,000 cash prize.

The putting contest is also putting forth a hefty $5,000 prize for its winner.

A chance to win a two-year lease on a luxury vehicle – a 2014 hybrid Lexus – is on the line as well, with the only criteria as outstanding golf skills. Needless to say, these activities will provide a powerful incentive for participants to prepare well and give it their all during the tournament.

In addition, there will also be a silent auction and a raffle, which will each offer a varying amount of several prizes.

“We have really good tee prizes as well,” Shaw said. “When you sign up at the beginning of the event, we give away a prize to all participants. It could be golfing equipment or golfing apparel.”

To preserve the element of surprise, Shaw kept mum about what the tee prize would be, so participants will be in for a treat during registration, which starts at 8:30 am on the day of the tournament.

After registration, the driving range warm-up will commence at 9 am, with the putting contest starting at 10 am and the shotgun start beginning at 11 am. After lunch, the tournament will conclude with the Helicopter Ball Drop at 4:30 pm and the reception and silent auction at 4:45 pm. A delicious dinner and awards banquet will seal the evening at 5 pm.

Aside from the events and activities themselves, Shaw emphasized that the annual tournament serves as a great bonding event as well.

The tournament will be held at Robinson Ranch at 27743 Sand Canyon Rd. in Santa Clarita. Prices are $450 for a golf tournament single and $1,700 for a golf tournament foursome.
