City of Malibu and Plastic Oceans Foundation Host Screening of “A Plastic Ocean” in Honor of World Oceans Day

The City of Malibu and the Plastic Oceans Foundation together are hosting a screening of the environmental documentary “A Plastic Ocean” to celebrate World Oceans Day onThursday, June 8, 7:00 PM in Malibu City Hall’s Civic Theater.

“Here in Malibu, the ocean is a part of daily life, so we have a strong interest in keeping it healthy and beautiful,” said Mayor Skylar Peak. “This film demonstrates the severity of the threat posed by plastic pollution, something that we are working to address with legislation limiting the use of plastic in the City.”

The City has taken measures to reduce plastic pollution including polystyrene foam and plastic bag bans, promoting recycling by businesses and residents, holding regular public recycling collection events, and reducing the use of plastic cutlery, plates, bottles and cups in City Hall.

A Plastic Ocean” follows the journey of two explorers as they travel to some of the most remote parts of the world to expose the grave damage that plastic pollution is causing on marine wildlife, ecosystems and people.

The film is directed by Craig Leeson, an award-winning journalist, filmmaker and television presenter whose work has appeared on BBC, CNN, National Geographic Channel, Bloomberg and PBS. It documents the newest science, proving how plastics, once they enter the oceans, break up into small particulates that enter the food chain where they attract toxins like a magnet. These toxins are stored in the fatty tissues of fish and are eventually consumed by people.

There is a suggested $25 donation with all proceeds from the event benefiting Plastic Oceans Foundation. Ticket sales end May 22, 2017. For tickets, visit
