City of Malibu to Host Screening of Documentary “Malibu Stories” June 15 at City Hall

The City of Malibu will host a special screening of “Malibu Stories” on the evening of June 15 in City Hall’s Malibu Civic Theater as part of the Cultural Arts Commission’s Salon Series. Local filmmakers Jay Armitage and Jules Williams have created an hour-long documentary woven from 10 shorts of their “Malibu Stories” films. This docu-series of personal and intimate stories captures the emotional journey of each individual told through the lens of Malibu itself.

“Malibu is filled with amazing people, and every one of them has a story to tell,” said Mayor Skylar Peak. “I commend the Cultural Arts Commission and the producers of Malibu Stories for putting on this exciting event and for creating these authentic reflections of Malibu.”

The screening will tell the story of Malibu through the real people that live here, their connection to the place they call home and how Malibu has impacted their own stories, from awakening their creativity to literally saving their lives. A truly unique place steeped in history, magical and spiritual, Malibu inspires innovation and community.

“Malibu has always drawn and inspired people who appreciate its majestic beauty, and the people of Malibu themselves have become part of the tapestry of this magical place,” said co-producer Jules Williams. “We hope that we have captured a glimpse of the people that make Malibu so special.”

Film producers approached the Malibu Cultural Arts Commission in February of this year to propose the idea of hosting a public screening of the film. The Commission felt the film was a perfect match for the already established Salon Series program. The evening will feature an extensive Q&A session with producers Williams and Armitage as well as some of the residents featured in the film. A special celebrity guest will moderate the evening followed by a reception with refreshments.

Some of the featured residents include film composer and producer Richard Gibbs, actor and artist Leigh McCloskey, local surfer Mitch Taylor, Director of the Chumash Wishtoyo Foundation Mati Waiya, musician and producer Dave Bassett and others.

The free screening will start at 7:00 PM in the Malibu Civic Theater at Malibu City Hall and is open seating to the first 240 people who attend, no reservations are required.
