COVID Symptom Monitoring Clearance Required of Students at UCLA Dining Halls

Rule in effect as of October 25

By Dolores Quintana

UCLA will require all students to show their COVID-19 monitoring clearance certificate before they will be allowed to enter dining halls on campus.

This rule became effective on Oct. 25.The large dining halls that fall under this rule are Bruin Plate, Epicuria at Covel, De Neve and The Spice Kitchen at Feast but none of the “grab and go” restaurants like Bruin Bowl, Bruin Café, The Drey, Rendezvous and The Study at Hedrick will be affected, according to the Daily Bruin

According to UCLA’s rules, all students who live, attend classes or who work on campus have been required to complete the symptom monitoring system for COVID 19 since June of last year, but according to students, dining halls and professors have not been strictly enforcing this rule in the last year since it went into effect which is a cause for concern.

The symptom monitoring and vaccination verification systems website gives students a certificate to present to anyone on the school grounds who is monitoring or in charge of students whereabouts during their daily life at the school. This certificate is sent to the student or faculty of the school after they complete a series of questions and present their proof of vaccination status on the website. This way any student or faculty member can show proof of vaccination with ease without worrying about bringing their vaccine card everywhere with them.

This step was taken because of the vaccine mandates passed by the County of Los Angeles and the City of Los Angeles. The county mandate took effect as of Oct. 7 and the City ordinance will kick in as of Nov. 4. The cities of Pasadena, Long Beach, and West Hollywood have also passed similar ordinances. The city ordinance requires proof of vaccination or proof of a negative test result for unvaccinated people if they want to patronize restaurants, bars, and other indoor facilities around the city. There are a certain number of people who are unvaccinated for health or religious reasons and have exceptions, but that doesn’t give them a pass to go wherever they please unvaccinated. The alternative is taking a COVID 19 test regularly or before students patronize a restaurant, school property, or any other venue to gain admission to whatever indoor facility students would like to go to.
