Mayor Eric Garcetti is resolved to travel on official business to Paris to attend an international climate conference, after terrorism attacks there, an aide said, and was out of California on personal business Friday.
Garcetti will return to Los Angeles “early next week,” before leaving again for Paris, according to mayoral spokeswoman Connie Llanos.
Mayoral aides did not disclose where Garcetti is spending this weekend. The out-of-state trip continues through Monday afternoon, mayoral aides said in an advisory.
Aides also were unclear which day he would actually return to Los Angeles, and when he will travel to Paris.
The 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference, known as COP21, begins Monday and lasts until Dec. 11. Garcetti is expected to take part in the conference next Thursday and Friday.
President Barack Obama and other leaders from around the world are expected to attend part of the summit to reach an agreement on goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which are linked to extreme changes in the weather.
Garcetti said earlier this month he was even more determined to go to the conference following the attacks in Paris that were attributed to terrorist group ISIS and that led to more than 130 people killed.
“Recent events have only reaffirmed my resolve and desire to stand with Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo as she hosts leaders from around the world. I am proud to join former (New York City) Mayor Michael Bloomberg and my fellow mayors for this historic summit,” he said.
