The Southern California Gas Company began updating and testing its natural gas pipeline system on June 20, with traffic expected to be affected in Westwood and other West LA neighborhoods.
Work began on June 20 at 9 p.m. on Sepulveda Blvd. just south of Wilshire and will continue along Sepulveda Blvd. for eight to 10 weeks, ending north of Pico Blvd.
According to an official release from SoCalGas, during this time, “crews will be excavating pipeline and installing testing components to enhance the integrity and safety of its system.”
In an effort to minimize traffic congestion work will be done at night only and there will be no lane closures during peak travel times. However, there may be instances where lanes will be closed
on Wilshire, Santa Monica, Olympic or Pico Boulevards.
In addition, there may be temporary street closures leading to Sepulveda (at Tennessee and Massachusetts Avenues).
Construction for the area is scheduled to take place during the following times:
• Monday to Friday, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• There will be no lane closures on Sundays before 8 p.m.
• Crew may be working around the clock on or around July 25 and August 2.
Traffic control and detour signs will be placed to guide motorists and facilitate the flow of traffic.
Traffic on Sepulveda Boulevard will be slower than usual and sometimes will have reductions in lanes. Digital message boards, safety cones and flaggers will be on-site directing traffic.
Rick Phillips, senior director of SoCalGas’ Pipeline Safety Enhancement Plan said the plan is expected to generate more than $1.9 billion in economic activity based on direct, indirect, and supporting services in Southern California.
