Kristen Bell of “Frozen” and Sarah Hyland of “Modern Family” to Perform in “Hair” at Hollywood Bowl

“Frozen” actress Kristen Bell and “Modern Family’s” Sarah Hyland are among the cast of the musical “Hair” to be performed at the Hollywood Bowl next week.

The musical, which is directed and choreographed by Adam Shankman, will run Aug. 1-3.

“It is a total celebration of the (Hollywood) Bowl and being outside,” Shankman said during rehearsals today.

Shankman, who is a judge on the television show “So You Think You Can Dance,” said he first heard of “Hair” being performed at a New York outdoor venue, and decided “that’s where it should be done.”

The off-Broadway musical, which debuted in 1967, ran through 1972 and was revived in 2009, follows the story of a “tribe” of politically active hippies living in New York City and protesting against the Vietnam War.

The ensemble cast for the Bowl dates includes pop singer Mario Jonah Platt and actors Benjamin Walker, Kevin Chamberlin and Jenna Ushkowitz, who is known for her role as Tina Cohen-Chang on the TV show “Glee.”

Working with such a talented group is the best part of “Hair,” Ushkowitz said.

“This cast is amazing and it is such rapid-fire and it is so chaotic, but it is just a blast and the cast is so talented,” said Ushkowitz, who plays Jeanie.

Hyland, known for her role as the oldest sibling on the ABC sitcom “Modern Family,” said her “Hair” character Crissy is far different from the role she played as Jackie O in the Broadway musical “Grey Gardens.”

“It’s very different. The styles of music are different. I’m not sure if Jackie (O) ever smoked marijuana … Crissy does a lot,” Hyland said with a laugh.

Hunter Parrish, who plays Claude in the musical, said the audience can expect a fun show.

“We are throwing it together, and I think what is exciting is for us to enjoy the fun of it because I think people want to come and enjoy the fun of ‘Hair,”’ said Parrish, who is best known for his role as Silas Botwin in Showtime’s “Weeds.”

Tickets to the musical, which features the hits “Aquarius,” “Good Morning Starshine” and “Easy to Be Hard,” are available at ticketmaster.com.
