A greater-alarm fire gutted a garden supply business in the Baldwin Hills area Friday night, but no injuries were reported, authorities said.
The fire at 6050 W. Jefferson Blvd. — near the border with Culver City – – was reported at 7:32 p.m., Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department said.
Fire was initially reported through the roof of the building and firefighters were in defensive mode upon arrival, fighting the flames from outside the structure, which began to collapse 12 minutes after the blaze was reported, Humphrey said.
A total of 135 LAFD firefighters responded, along with an engine company from Culver City, and knocked down the blaze in 68 minutes, he said.
The fire was contained to the heavily damaged business, which Humphrey identified as Inner Gardens, a nursery, garden fixture and design firm.
Some smoke and water damage was sustained to an adjacent art framing store to the west of the building where the fire broke out, Humphrey said.
The cause was under investigation and the estimated monetary loss was being tabulated, he said.
