The Meeting of Two Queens (1991) – 7:30 PM
Director: Cecilia Barriga
Chilean filmmaker Cecilia Barriga ingeniously recuts scenes from the films of Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich, constructing an imagined romantic encounter between the two icons of on-screen androgyny. (DCP, b&w, 14 min.)
Queen Christina (1933) – 8:00 PM
Director: Rouben Mamoulian
Greta Garbo portrays the gender-fluid regent of Sweden, Queen Christina, in a role that became one of the most celebrated of her career. Inspired by the life of the eponymous WWI dancer-cum-double-agent, Greta Garbo stars as a glamorous German spy in this espionage melodrama set in Paris circa 1917. Directed by George Fitzmaurice, the film is hailed as a sexy romance featuring Garbo’s flawless portrayal. (35mm, b&w, 91 min.)
