The entire field for Sunday’s Los Angeles Marathon will start from Dodger Stadium at 6:55 a.m., a half-hour earlier than originally planned, because of the forecast of record heat, organizers announced today.
Other steps will also be taken in an attempt to better ensure runner safety.
The race will have wave starts to ensure proper runner spacing and enable more efficient replenishment of supplies at early aid stations. Additional water and Gatorade Endurance Formula will be provided at all 24 aid stations.
“Cooling buses” will be stationed along the course and at the finish line; misting stations, cold towels and ice will be provided and the length of time finish line services will be available will be extended.
“While we are anticipating warmer temperatures for Sunday’s race, we are confident in our level of preparedness and the resources we have available to support a positive race day experience for all participants,” said Dr. Glenn Ault, the race’s medical director.
Ault advised runners to drink the proper amount of fluids, both water and electrolytes; to study the race course and be aware of water and aid station locations; go to a water or medical station if they become dizzy, lightheaded, nauseous, vomiting or in a lot of pain; dress appropriately, avoid cotton fabrics, long sleeves and long pants and instead wear lightweight, breathable fabrics that will help runners keep their cool.
