The Los Angeles County coast will be hit by high surf today — though it will be far tamer than further north — amid the start of a warming trend forecast to climax with summer-like highs in the high 80s next week.

Surf of between 4 and 6 feet with sets of up to 8 feet will hit west-facing beaches, according to a National Weather Service statement. It said the high surf would be accompanied by rip currents.

A beach hazards statement will be in effect in L.A. County from this afternoon through Friday evening. More serious high surf advisories will be in force to the north in Ventura County and Santa Barbara County, where maximum sets of 18 feet are possible, according to broadcasters.

Temperatures, meanwhile, will start rising today. The NWS forecast sunny skies and highs of 55 on Mount Wilson; 57 in Palmdale and Lancaster; 64 in Saugus; 65 in Avalon and San Clemente; 66 in Laguna Beach; 67 at LAX and in Newport Beach; 68 in Long Beach and Burbank; 69 in Fullerton, San Gabriel, Woodland Hills and Pasadena; 70 in downtown L.A., Irvine, Mission Viejo and Anaheim; and 73 in Yorba Linda.

Temperatures will rise by up to six degrees tomorrow and reach the 80s in some communities Monday. Highs of 87 are expected in San Gabriel Tuesday and Wednesday.
