His 24th Time, President Obama Returns to L.A. For ‘Ellen,’ Two Fundraisers

Obama
Today will be Obama’s 24th visit to Los Angeles and Orange counties as president.

President Barack Obama will return to Los Angeles today to tape an appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and attend a pair of Democratic National Committee fundraisers.

As is typical with presidential visits, motorists should anticipate delays as roads are closed to accommodate his motorcade.

Obama is expected to attend a Hancock Park reception hosted by entertainment lawyer Aaron Rosenberg and his husband, “Cougar Town” producer Danny Rose, according to Variety, which cited a copy of the invitation. Tickets will range from $1,000 per person to as high as $33,400 per couple — including prime seating, a photo opp and a greeting from the co-hosts. John Legend is expected to perform at the event.

Obama will also attend a separate dinner, with tickets starting at $10,000 each, according to news reports.

The president will remain in Los Angeles overnight, according to the White House. He is scheduled to fly to Palm Springs on Friday in advance of a summit of Asian leaders on Monday and Tuesday, which the president will host at Sunnylands resort in Rancho Mirage.

Obama will be joined by Secretary of State John Kerry at Sunnylands for the gathering of leaders from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. The summit is aimed at strengthening the new U.S.-ASEAN strategic partnership, forged last November during a presidential trip to Malaysia.

A demonstration is planned in the mid-Wilshire area of Los Angeles this afternoon to protest the deportation of Central American immigrants.

“The Human Rights Alliance for Child Refugees and Families will demand that President Obama end the terror on Central American Refugees,” said a statement announcing the demonstration, which is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Rossmore Avenue.

Obama was last in the Southland in October, when he attended a series of fundraisers for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and Democratic National Committee.

He took part in a roundtable discussion at the home of “Star Trek” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” director J.J. Abrams, a fundraising event at the Pacific Palisades home of psychiatrist Dr. Robin Berman — where Jamie Foxx performed for guests — and a dinner at the home of interior designer Michael Smith and his partner, former HBO executive James Costos, the U.S. ambassador to Spain.

That visit was Obama’s 23rd to Los Angeles and Orange counties as president.

Obama has taken part in fundraisers during 20 of his previous visits to Los Angeles and Orange counties as president, attending 37 of them in Los Angeles County on those trips, occasionally attending several during the same visit.

Through the seventh years of their administrations, Bill Clinton conducted 42 fundraisers in the region, George W. Bush nine and Ronald Reagan eight, according to research by Brendan J. Doherty, an associate professor in the Department of Political Science at the U.S. Naval Academy, for his book “The Rise of the President’s Permanent Campaign.”
