An inert grenade caused a scare and evacuations when it was taken to Santa Monica police headquarters Saturday.
A family member found the real-looking device while going through the belongings of a recently deceased relative, Sgt. Robert D’Andrea told City News Service.
It was brought about 6:15 p.m. to police headquarters at 333 Olympic Drive, D’Andrea said.
The station was evacuated and a bomb squad was summoned, he said.
The grenade was quickly found to be inert, D’Andrea said.
Residents who find such devices are advised to leave them where they are and call authorities to the scene.
“Do not drive with it in your car,” D’Andrea said.
