LA County Officials Staff Center to Help People Affected by Sand Fire

Starting today, Los Angeles County officials will staff a temporary center in Newhall to help residents affected by the Sand Fire rebuild homes and replace records lost in the blaze.

The center at Hart Hall at William S. Hart Park, 24151 Newhall Ave., will be in operation three days: today, Saturday and Monday.

The hours of operation will be between 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and Monday, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. No service will be provided Sunday.

The Sand Fire, which broke out July 22, was reported 100 percent contained Thursday. The blaze scorched 41,432 acres, destroyed 18 homes and killed a man. At the height of the fire, some 20,000 people had to vacate their homes.

Representatives of state, county and nonprofit organizations will be on hand at the center to provide information on how to replace lost records, apply for building permits and offer other help and referrals. Donations will not be accepted at the center.

Jeff Reeb, director of the Los Angeles County Office of Emergency Management, said the local assistance center will “provide a single place for people impacted by the Sand Fire to receive help and get them on the road to recovery.”

People unable to go to the center can get information and assistance by dialing 211 or online at http://211la.org .
