George McKenna, a candidate for Los Angeles Unified School District’s (LAUSD) District 1 board seat, earned an endorsement from the New Frontier Democratic Club earlier this week, it was reported.

According to the New Frontier Democratic Club, McKenna won 75 percent of ballots cast.

“The New Frontier Democratic Club is proud to endorse George McKenna for L.A. School Board. George has the experience needed to make sure the District 1 students are not left behind and receive their fair share of resources and services,” New Frontier Democratic Club member and past president Patt Sanders said. “Dr. McKenna will provide the kind of leadership that is the needed on the most critical issues concerning our students.”

“I am proud to have earned the endorsement of the New Frontier Democratic Club,” McKenna said. “I am running for School Board because the community asked me to and because I want to be a part of the solution in helping to create stronger and healthier schools across Los Angeles. The endorsement of the New Frontier Democratic Club brings to my campaign a powerful grassroots force in South L.A. and citywide.”

McKenna is one of seven candidates currently running to complete the term of the late Marguerite LaMotte term.

School board officials voted in January to hold a special election to fill the vacancy left by LaMotte after she recently passed away. LaMotte’s term is scheduled to expire June 30, 2015.

The election will be held June 3 as part of the State primary. If no candidate crosses the 50-percent-plus-one threshold, a runoff election will be held Aug. 12 with the top two vote getters.

LAUSD Board District 1 includes a portion of Century City, Cheviot Hills, part of Gardena, University Park, and Windsor Hills.

The New Frontier Democratic Club is the largest and oldest African-American Democratic club in California.

More information about McKenna’s campaign can be found on his website.
