LAUSD Superintendent Condemns Immigration Activity Near Schools, Pledges Safety Measures

Carvalho Announces Increased Security at Graduations, Online Summer Options

Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho voiced strong concern this week over recent federal immigration enforcement activity reported near local school campuses, warning that such actions are instilling fear among students and families.

In a public statement, Carvalho said he was “dismayed” by the proximity of enforcement operations to schools, describing the impact as harmful and unnecessary for communities simply trying to navigate daily life.

“Our schools must be safe havens—places where every child can learn, grow, and thrive without the fear of separation from their families,” Carvalho said. “The presence of immigration enforcement near campuses threatens that essential right.”

Speaking this week, Carvalho said LAUSD will establish security-style perimeters at all graduation sites, with the district’s police force set to double its presence to ensure a safe and uninterrupted experience for students and their families. He pledged that during the upcoming summer school session, students who don’t feel comfortable coming for in person learning would have online class options.

Superintendent Carvalho stated, “There are two schools in our community that within a couple blocks, we see federal vans parked. No action has been taken, but we interpret those actions as actions of intimidation.”

He emphasized that students deserve “support, not surveillance,” and reaffirmed the district’s commitment to maintaining safe and welcoming environments for all children, regardless of immigration status.

District officials are coordinating with school administrators, safety personnel, and community organizations to provide support for impacted campuses. Families are being advised to stay alert for school communications and report any immigration enforcement sightings immediately.

Parents and guardians who witness federal activity near schools are urged to contact their school directly, use the LASAR safety app, or call the district’s Family Hotline at (213) 443-1300.
