LAPD Says Suspect Wielded Box Cutter Near Weyburn and Glendon
Authorities arrested a man Sunday afternoon following a confrontation in which he allegedly threatened Westwood Village safety ambassadors with a metal blade near the intersection of Weyburn and Glendon avenues.
According to program supervisor David Tunnell, the incident began around noon when two ambassadors responded to reports of a suspected shoplifter at the Corner Outlet. The individual became agitated and displayed what appeared to be a box cutter before leaving the store.
A bystander quickly notified a nearby officer, triggering a foot pursuit that ended near Westwood Boulevard and Kinross Avenue. Sgt. Terrel Maston of the Los Angeles Police Department’s West LA Patrol Division said the suspect was apprehended around 12:40 p.m. and arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.
The man was transported to UCLA Health for treatment of an elbow injury sustained during the arrest and will be placed in LAPD custody upon his release, Maston added.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including LAPD and the UCLA Police Department, supported by an LAPD helicopter. In a written statement, UCPD acting Captain Jeffrey Chobanian confirmed his department assisted until the situation was resolved but deferred further comment to LAPD, which is leading the investigation.
No injuries were reported among ambassador personnel. Tunnell said three additional team members were deployed as backup following the incident. He noted that while ambassadors are trained to handle nonviolent issues and assist with social services, they rely on law enforcement to manage incidents involving weapons or physical threats.
