A man suspected of shoplifting and shooting at a security guard at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza was killed June 25 in an officer-involved shooting in a nearby residential neighborhood, police said.
Cellphone video broadcast on NBC4 showed an officer firing at the suspect from the doorway of a residential garage in the 4400 block of Angeles Vista Road, shortly after an initial confrontation with mall security staff.
“The individual was transported to Cedars-Sinai hospital, where he was pronounced deceased,” Los Angeles Police Dept. Deputy Chief Bob Green told reporters at the scene.
The shooting at the mall, located at 3650 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard took place about 7:30 p.m., said Los Angeles police Lt. H. Fanfassian.
KCAL9 reported that the unidentified suspect was then chased on foot by the security staff to the 4400 block of Angeles Vista Boulevard, where he allegedly barricaded himself inside a garage.
The officer-involved shooting occurred shortly later, the station reported.
The suspect was described by police as a shoplifter who had been confronted by mall security staff.
“The suspect opened fire inside the mall at a security guard but he wasn’t hit,” Fanfassian said. “The suspect then ran from the mall into a nearby neighborhood and that’s where we started searching for him.”
KCAL9 said a three-block perimeter was locked down before a police canine found the suspect.
An NBC4 report said returning residents had been barred from their homes as the search continued.
