A report tonight of a man possibly armed with a gun at Chapman University in Orange prompted an order for anyone in one building to shelter in place, but a search by police turned up no gunman, authorities said.
A man with a possible weapon was reported in the school’s DeMille Hall at 7:13 p.m., according to the university.
A police dispatcher said the man was reported to be possibly armed with a gun.
Those in the hall were advised to shelter in place, while those elsewhere on the campus did not need to evacuate, according to the university.
Police searched DeMille Hall, but found no gunman, the dispatcher said.
“Chapman University takes every threat seriously,” according to a school statement. “With recent events in other parts of the world, we do not want to alarm you, but we do want to communicate that there has been a reported possible threat situation that Orange law enforcement is investigating.”
A student told KCAL9 that he was taking a final exam in DeMille Hall when he and other students were told to hide under desks with the lights out.
Email alerts informed students of the possible threat, another student said.
