Olympians, sports legends, City of Los Angeles Officials and the 2024 Olympic Committee used the Annenberg Community Beach House as a picturesque backdrop to make the formal announcement of Los Angeles’ bid to host the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games on Tuesday.
The announcement followed this morning’s unanimous vote by the LA City Council in support of the city’s attempt to bring the Summer Games back to the United States for the first time in 28 years. The city’s Olympic bid was endorsed by the United States Olympic Committee board of directors and LA Mayor Eric Garcetti. Joining Garcetti in making the announcement were USOC Chairman Larry Probst, USOC CEO Scott Blackmun, LA City Council President Herb Wesson, LA 2024 Chairman Casey Wasserman and numerous Olympians and Paralympians. Legendary sportscaster Al Michaels served as the master of ceremonies.
Some noted Olympians on hand for the announcement included American Olympic Gold Medal diver Greg Louganis, American Olympic Gold Medal winner boxer Oscar De La Hoya, American Olympic Gold Medal winner decathlete Bryan Clay and American Olympic Gold Medal winner sprinter Carmelita Jeter to name a few.
The International Olympic Committee is expected to make a final decision on a host city in September 2017.
Potential foreign bidders include Rome; Nairobi, Kenya; Casablanca, Morocco; Johannesburg and Durban, South Africa; Doha, Qatar; Melbourne, Australia; Paris; Hamburg, Germany; and St. Petersburg, Russia.
