Meet Century City: Chamber of Commerce Marketing Director Barbara Brekke

Barbara Brekke.
Barbara Brekke.

For Century City Chamber of Commerce Marketing and Communications Director Barbara Brekke, her role at the small but mighty Chamber has taught her a great deal about infrastructure and civic involvement.

Tell me a little about what you do in Century City?

I’m the marketing “arm” of the team to help our valued Chamber members expand their marketplace reach. I work closely with our various Chamber Councils to develop relevant programs that help individuals and companies make fruitful connections and generate business. Additionally, I create email campaigns and promotional materials; produce approximately 25 calendar events a year; and oversee digital marketing including our website content. The Chamber staff is small, but mighty!

What motivated you to get into the role?

After spending 12 years in the beauty industry as a copywriter and marketer, I was ready to use my skills in new ways. The opportunity to work for the Chamber arose, and I was quickly drawn to the idea that I would be helping to brand a community. I’ve been fortunate to work with my boss, Susan Bursk, who has taught me a great deal about infrastructure and civic involvement. I’ve also learned from our wonderful Chamber members, as they represent a range of industries, and it’s been terrific to learn about their journeys to success.

Where did it all begin for you career-wise?

While I was in college, I was the Department Editor for a travel publication for three years. I later became the Features Editor for a daily newspaper, and my journalistic heart wanted to follow in Ernest Hemingway or Christiane Amanpour’s footsteps. However, I took a major detour to work in the cosmetics industry. I had a blast naming lipstick shades; creating television and print campaigns; and collaborating with talented photographers and makeup artists. To this day, I can still read an ingredient label and understand what’s really in a product.

What do you love about Century City? Where is your favorite place to eat/exercise/take a break from the office in the area?

This is an area full of energy. I love seeing the work force walking around. When I do get outside, I’m bound to bump into a familiar face, which is always nice.

We’re lucky to have so many fantastic food options! I’m particularly fond of The Stand, Obicà and Mrs. Winston’s, while Craft, the InterContinental Hotel and Gulfstream are my picks for something a little extra special.

David Barton Gym has been my workout spot for almost a year. The classes and instructors are great, which helps keep me motivated. And if time permits, I get some fresh air in Century Park. It’s not only convenient, but beautifully laid out and maintained.

If you could add one thing to the area what would it be and why?

I think our neighborhood could use a tasty, casual donut shop. Nothing trendy like “fo-nuts” or “cronuts” for me! I’m a purist and prefer a good, old-fashion glazed donut or occasionally an apple fritter.

What do you do in you spare time?

I enjoy going to the gym; practicing yoga; reading; listening to music; and trying new dining spots. And once Formula 1 season starts up again, I’ll be spending my weekends watching the races on Tivo!

What is one cool thing that you want to do this year?

I’ve been thinking about volunteering for a couple of amazing organizations for a while now, and it’s time for me to commit. I’ve had the privilege in my current position to work with a number of charitably-minded individuals, and they’ve each inspired me to take a closer look at getting involved. Also, I’m still working on my yoga headstand!

Where was your last vacation?

My boyfriend and I spent a week in New York for the Thanksgiving holiday. While it was very cold, the weather didn’t stop us from traveling by foot and being spontaneous about how we spent our time.

Where do you wish your last vacation was?

I was quite pleased with my recent vacation spot, but would love to get around to visiting Spain, France or Greece in the near future.
